New Heights Circus

Anna Thomson is a Melbourne-based performing artist, theatre-maker, workshop facilitator, circus performer and singer.

She trained for three years and worked as a community outreach performer with the Women’s Circus (2010-2012). She has performed in Quite Contrary (2010 Innovation Award, Melbourne Fringe) and Snakes and Ladders (2011). She assisted Catherine Simmons in the creation of an outdoor performance for the Light in Winter Festival (2013). This piece was created in collaboration with a group from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, and highlighted the experiences of newly arrived refugees.

In 2013 she founded ABC Circus Education, a performance-based company that produced innovative, educational shows and facilitated workshops for children and young people. She directed, produced and performed in ‘TIME OUT!’ for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2014), and toured the show regionally.

Anna works with schools in regional and remote Victoria, running workshops in physical theatre and circus. In2014 she completed a residency at Avenel Primary School. She began working with Uprising Theatre in 2014 as an associate artist, and collaborated with the development of 1001 Arabian Nights, and Schererzade (2014).

She is currently assisting with the creation and direction of their latest production, The Wheel of Fate. Anna is studying full time at the John Bolton Theatre School in Melbourne.

We loved having Anna teach circus skills and mask at 3 of our school this year (2015). Her professional, engaging approach encouraged even the most shy students, and all loved the interesting, fun activities she ran. The performances were great! We will certainly be asking her back next year.

After a fantastic show and day of workshops we asked Anna back for a 4-week residency at Avenel Primary this year (2014). She worked with a group to create three short pieces for the end of year concert, which was a great hit. The children particularly enjoyed the mask work and games. We hope to stay in touch with Anna in the future.
